Barret Zoph Departs OpenAI After Five Months as Head of Enterprise AI Sales

Barret Zoph has left OpenAI after just five months as head of enterprise AI sales. The company confirmed his departure recently, marking another chapter in Zoph’s tumultuous relationship with the organization.

Zoph rejoined OpenAI in January 2026, having co-founded Thinking Machines Lab prior to his return. He was brought on board to lead the company’s push into enterprise sales, a role deemed critical as OpenAI prepares for a planned IPO. In a farewell message posted in the company’s Slack channels, Zoph confirmed his exit, signaling a shift in leadership during a pivotal time for the organization.

Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, previously expressed enthusiasm about Zoph’s return, highlighting expectations for his contributions. However, Zoph’s tenure was cut short, following his original departure from OpenAI in fall 2024 amid allegations of misconduct related to Thinking Machines Lab.

Zoph’s exit could have repercussions for OpenAI’s enterprise strategy, an integral component of its revenue growth as it eyes the public markets. His brief leadership underscores the challenges the company faces as it navigates both internal and external pressures in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
