Amazon MGM Drops Film About OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Directed by Luca Guadagnino

Amazon MGM has dropped “Artificial,” a film directed by Luca Guadagnino that chronicles a tumultuous week in 2023 when Sam Altman was both fired and later reinstated as CEO of OpenAI. The decision, first reported by Puck, reflects the studio’s view that the movie would be better served if released by a different studio.

Starring Andrew Garfield as Altman, the film also features Monica Barbaro, Ike Barinholtz, and Yura Borisov in supporting roles. Amazon MGM’s decision is notable given the close relationship the company has with OpenAI, highlighted by a $50 billion investment announced in February.

The filmmakers are now actively seeking a new studio to handle the film’s release, which could impact its distribution and overall audience reach. The project had been under development for about a year and aims to depict a dramatic chapter in Altman’s career.

Amazon and OpenAI’s partnership underscores the complexities involved in the entertainment and tech industries, particularly when high-profile figures are concerned.
